Hello
“…If not you then who?
From the Desk of the Executive Producer
Teejay Olander

As a born and raised Bahamian, my life’s work has always been rooted in storytelling, culture, identity, and the power of presentation. I am Teejay Olander, Executive Producer of The Bahamians, a publication created to be more than media, more than a newspaper, and more than an information source. The Bahamians is being developed as a living database, cultural platform, and global voice for everything connected to Bahamian people, Bahamian history, Bahamian excellence, and the Bahamian way of life.

For many years, I have lived and worked in the United States as a marketing, communications, public relations, crisis management, branding, and event development specialist. My professional journey has allowed me to manage major campaigns, produce and oversee more than 500 events, create new brands and programs, lead marketing and rebranding initiatives, and work across corporate, cultural, entertainment, tourism, government, and community spaces. My experience includes serving as Global Marketing Director for World Relays Bahamas 2024, working on public awareness campaigns in The Bahamas, co-developing cultural and hospitality concepts such as Kafe Kalik, supporting BAAM Magazine, and contributing to major Bahamian-focused projects connected to tourism, sports, gaming, media, and international promotion.

Throughout my career, I have used marketing not simply as a business tool, but as a way to shape perception, build pride, and introduce culture to new audiences. I have worked in branding, proposal development, creative direction, event production, media campaigns, sponsorship development, and communications strategy. I have also been involved in Caribbean cultural leadership through organizations and initiatives such as the Bahamas Association of Chicago, XTASY Mas Band, ChiCarnival, ChiParty Weekend, and other platforms designed to keep Caribbean and Bahamian culture alive beyond our borders.

The mission of The Bahamian is personal. It is about taking The Bahamas to the world while also preserving the stories, contributions, creativity, and cultural identity of our people for generations to come. Too often, the richness of Bahamian life is reduced to sun, sand, and sea. While those are beautiful parts of who we are, they are not the full story. We are a people of history, faith, resilience, flavor, music, folklore, entrepreneurship, art, language, fashion, food, politics, community, and pride. The Bahamians exists to document that full story.

In addition to the publication, we are developing The Bahamian Experience, a cultural museum and destination designed to hold, preserve, educate, and celebrate all things Bahamian. This experience will serve as a home for Bahamian history, arts, culture, food, storytelling, Junkanoo, folklore, products, and merchandising. It will be a place where residents, visitors, students, families, tourists, and the global Bahamian diaspora can walk into one space and feel the heartbeat of The Bahamas.
The Bahamian Experience is not only a museum. It is a cultural marketplace, an educational center, a tourism attraction, and a merchandising platform designed to create economic opportunity for Bahamian artists, creatives, historians, storytellers, designers, food producers, musicians, cultural practitioners, and entrepreneurs. It is where preservation meets presentation, and where culture becomes both an experience and an industry.

My goal is simple but powerful: to protect what makes us Bahamian, to present it with dignity and creativity, and to make sure the world understands that The Bahamas is more than a destination. It is a people. It is a story. It is a culture. It is a legacy.

Through The Bahamian and The Bahamian Experience, we are building a platform that celebrates who we are, honors where we came from, and creates new opportunities for where we are going. This is my commitment as a publisher, as a creative professional, and most importantly, as a Bahamian.
